ALMA — The Alma College football team continued its historic run Saturday, topping No. 21/RV DePauw (Ind.) University in the first round of the 2023 NCAA Division III football playoffs, 32-17.

The No. 11/13 Scots will continue their quest for the national championship Saturday, Nov. 25, at noon, on the road against the No. 2-ranked University of Mount Union (Ohio). The game will be livestreamed through the Mount Union website; there is a $10 fee.

The Scots’ defense was the story of the game in the first round, with senior defensive lineman Jerome Roberson (Pontiac/Oxford) scoring a touchdown off of a fumble recovery on the game’s first play. Fifth-year senior defensive back Gage Nelson (Standish/Standish Sterling) led the team in tackles with 17, while sophomore defensive back Preston Marlatt (Atlanta/Johannesburg-Lewiston) notched an interception.

Sophomore quarterback Carter St. John (Zionsville, Ind./Bishop Chatard) was a steady hand in the pocket for Alma, going 10-for-19 for 153 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore tailback Eddie Williams (Eastpointe/Fraser) led rushers in the game with 76 yards, while senior wideout Devon Frenchko (St. Joseph) led Alma receivers with 96 yards on 3 receptions.

The win marked the second-straight year the Scots have an 11-0 record.
