POSITION SUMMARY:

The Department of Physics and Engineering at Alma College invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Engineering beginning August 2025. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Computer, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering or a related field at the time of appointment; industry or postdoctoral experience is viewed positively. Candidates should enjoy teaching a wide variety of courses and be committed to teaching engineering in an undergraduate liberal arts context.

The successful applicant must be well-qualified by education or experience to develop and teach upper-level courses in Computer and Electrical Engineering, and will share in teaching courses in the Engineering core, including Physics and possibly Computer Science. Most faculty also teach courses at various levels that contribute to the College’s Core Curriculum. The standard teaching load for this position is six units throughout the academic year and may include teaching in different modalities.

The successful candidate will have a significant role in shaping our engineering programs to meet the standards for ABET accreditation. (Experience with the accreditation process would be valuable.) This person will be actively involved in maintaining the quality and relevance of the program’s curricular offerings and in developing structures to support student success from recruitment to the classroom to career placement, including first-generation and other underrepresented populations. The successful candidate will be a key figure in developing internship and/or coop opportunities with regional business partners (in collaboration with the Center for College and Community Engagement). All tenure-track faculty are expected to maintain an active research agenda, and undergraduate involvement is highly valued. Tenure-track faculty are also expected to contribute service to the college through committee work and other activities, and service to the public and to the scientific community is also valued.

The successful applicant will become part of a department of three tenure-track faculty in active collaboration with faculty from the department of Math and Computer Science. We offer majors in Physics, Engineering Science, Computer Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. The College also offers majors in Computer Science and Mathematics. The faculty has a deep commitment to quality liberal arts education; student development in a residential setting; student projects and research; ethical and safe practices; and interdisciplinary, intercultural, and international education. Salary, benefits, and support for professional development are competitive.

Interested candidates must submit the Alma College application, curriculum vitae, transcripts, a statement of teaching philosophy, a description of research directions suitable for an undergraduate institution, and names and contact information of 3 references via the apply now button below. These application materials should at some point address the candidate’s ideas for industry partnerships, possibilities for contributing courses to the college’s Core curriculum for non-majors, and how their experience prepares them to support a diverse community of learners. Review of applications will begin November 18, 2024 and will continue until filled. Letters of recommendation will be solicited from selected applicants later in the process.
