ALLIANCE, Ohio — Against all odds, the Alma College football team is still dancing.
The No. 11-ranked Scots stunned an NCAA Division III powerhouse, No. 2 Mount Union University, on the road Saturday, 24-20, to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament.
Alma won the game in dramatic fashion; with just 1:29 to go in the fourth quarter and down by three points, the Scots marched 96 yards down the field before sophomore quarterback Carter St. John flipped the ball over the offensive line to fifth-year senior wideout Cole Thomas from two yards out for the game-winning score.
The action heads back to Alma this Saturday, Dec. 2, where the Scots will play in the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament for the first time against No. 13 SUNY Cortland at Bahlke Field. The game begins at noon, with gates open at 11 a.m. for the general public. Those who require mobility assistance will be able to access the stadium 15 minutes earlier. The Scotsman Walk takes place at 9:45 a.m. and an alumni tent will be available in the tailgate area, northwest of Bahlke Field, beginning at 10 a.m.
Comeback kids: Alma went into halftime against Mount Union trailing, 10-0, and did not score until the fourth quarter. The Scots’ offense first came to life when St. John hooked up with Thomas for their first touchdown of the game. The score was 20-10, with 4:45 remaining in the game, when St. John hit senior wideout Nate Webb with a 76-yard bomb to minimize the deficit to only three. Following a crucial stop, the Scots then engineered the game-winning drive that will live on in Alma lore for years to come.
