ALMA — Veterans have powerful stories to tell, which can be powerful, healing and inspirational.
With a goal of honoring veterans and helping to amplify their stories, the Alma College Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing program is hosting a writing workshop for veterans, at no cost. The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Alma College Andison Center, in the Greg Hatcher Learning Commons.
“The veterans who participated in last year’s program were so receptive and appreciative that we knew we want to make this workshop an annual event,” said Sophfronia Scott, director of the Alma College MFA program. “I’m excited to see what writing comes out of this year’s workshop.”
The event will feature teaching sessions by MFA faculty, writing prompts and information on how veterans can continue their work, with support of the MFA program. Graduates of the MFA program will facilitate the event. Participants can join, either in-person or through Zoom.

Joy Bilbey is a 2023 graduate of the Alma College MFA program who is helping to facilitate the workshop. She said being involved is one way to help show organizers’ gratitude for their service.
“One thing I’ve noticed in working with veterans through this program is that they have a high level of humility. Often, they don’t think they need to tell their stories — and that’s a big reason why we, as a public, need to hear them,” Bilbey said. “Veterans have many stories to tell and we’re trying to give them the tools and opportunity to turn those stories into published works.”
