ALMA — Accolades have continued to roll in for the Alma College football team, following the Scots’ historic 2023 season.

Four players were named to the D3football.com All-American team: Fifth-year senior linebacker Odin Soffredine led the way with First-Team honors; while fifth-year senior wide receiver Devon Frenchko and freshman long snapper Abram Evans followed with Third-Team accolades. Sophomore quarterback Carter St. John picked up Fourth-Team honors.

Soffredine was one of the team’s leaders on a defense that led all of Division 3 in takeaways this year. He racked up 104 tackles, leading the Scots in that category, and grabbed four interceptions to tie for the team lead. Soffredine also forced one fumble and had two sacks.

In 2023, Frenchko and St. John proved to be one of the top QB-WR connections in all of Division 3. Frenchko led the Scots with 1,259 yards receiving over 13 games, averaging close to 100 yards per game through the air. He also led the team with 14 touchdowns.

St. John, who was named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Offensive Player of the Year, finished the year with 3,323 yards passing and 38 touchdowns. He had a completion percentage of 71.17 percent and threw only five interceptions. St. John also rushed for 539 yards and scored eight touchdowns on the ground.

As a team, it was a season for the ages in Alma. The Scots finished the regular season undefeated and won the MIAA championship for the second-straight year. They reached the third round of the Division 3 playoffs for the first time in program history before falling to a SUNY Cortland team that eventually won the Division 3 championship.

Eleven players were named First-Team All-MIAA, including St. John, Frenchko, Soffredine, Nate Webb, Reese Townsend, Jerome Roberson, Hunter Sanderson, Eli Jackson, Drew Humm, Bryce Fredenburg and Zach Poff. Five more were named to the Second Team: Eddie Williams, J.B. Couch, Maddox Mozal, Gage Nelson and Josh Hernandez.

Head coach Jason Couch picked up accolades, too. The 1997 Alma College graduate and three-year starting center, won the MIAA 2023 Football Coach of the Year award.
